History

Harrison County was first settled around 1838 with many settling along Sugar Creek in the Bethany area. It took several days before it was determined that Bethany, which was originally called Dallas, would be the county seat. Railroads reached Bethany in the late 1800s and industry also played a vital role in the community’s growth which was once one of the best trading posts in Northwest Missouri.
